Build and Manage Your Own Web Site

Q: S3DNews Part 5 - SCAMs:How to make your WEB SITE perform better for your company

A: October 11, 2010

Over the years, I can not begin to count the number of
times you all have contacted us asking if this or that is
legitimate or not. SCAMs are abundant on the Internet
and is one of the primary reasons I started this business.
Without getting on my soapbox too much, they chap my
hide!

If you ever receive a message about your site that you
are concerned about, please, PLEASE, PLEASE ask
us about it. We receive questions about SCAMs nearly
every week and look at it as a good service to answer your
concerns. Here are a few of the more common SCAMs we
see on a weekly basis:

  1. Domain registry of America - Huge SCAM!!
They send out what looks like an invoice for the registration
of your domain name. It looks official and has a lot of
official sounding terminology in it. DO NOT SEND THEM
MONEY OR GO TO THEIR WEB SITE
. What they do is prey off
those who know no better and send them money. Then they
attempt to transfer your domain name away from you. In your
case we manage your domain names so we get those requests. I
get those request on a daily basis for sites that have paid
AND sites that have NOT paid. If we
manage your domain name, no such request is ever even opened
    and is immediately deleted.

When they are successful (not with us) they hold the
domain name (yoursite.com) until it is about to expire. When
it does their rates go up and they will try to up-sell you on
a plethora of other services we provide for free.

  2. Domain Registrations offers from other countries (like China) that
come in your email. I get these almost hourly. This is
why we do not publish your name or other personal information
in the domain registry. Now they are getting a bit more
inventive since fewer and fewer people provide contact
information in the domain registry. They have people that
will scour the web and try to find your email address from
your web site. This is why we do not recommend publishing
your email address on your web site. DONT DO IT!!

  3. Claims that your password is compromised. This will come
in an email that will look like it is legitimate and will
include a link that will take you to a web page that looks
like what you would think would be there, then asks you to
input your user name and password. How this works is the
criminal will send out an email to you that your PayPal (for
the sake of this example) account is under review or has been
comprimised or even 'our policies have changed'. You are
instructed to click on the provided link that takes you to
a page that looks like PayPal... company logo and all! The
instructions will tell you to log in to confirm or reply or
what ever the current scam is. When you enter you user name
and password, you are simply giving them access to your
account. We have seen this identical SCAM for:

    • PayPal
    • eBay
    • Chase Bank
    • CitiBank
    • Microsoft
    • FaceBook
    • DHL
    • Newegg.com
    • UPS
    • American Bankers Association
    • Internal Revenue Service
    • Customer Service
    • Western Union
    • Who's Who
    • Digg
    • Golf Magazine
    • PNC Bank (insert the name of ANY bank here)
    • Bank of America
    • American Bank
    • Amazon.com

Just to mention a few. This whole list came from the first 800
email in my trash right now!

  4. Message via email OR postal mail that your email is
compromised or your email settings have changed. You are
instructed to log in to a special site to update your
information. User name and password are stolen, of course,
then your email is used to scam people on eBay or other
services or they even try to use your PayPal account and try
to steal money from your account.

Not long ago a series of email went out that had our
company logo and information on it with this type of
SCAM. It claimed that we were making emergency changes
and you have to 'take care of it today!'

  5. SEO service will claim that your site cannot be found on
the web or you have broken links that need to be fixed or
the world will end or some other nonsense.
    One word:
    SCAM. And common one, too.

In the next few parts I will be getting back to your site
and things that can be done to help your site... for FREE
if you have Web SPeED.
